Artificial Intelligence, or AI for short has been dominating headlines for the past few years over whether or not it will be the end of the human race. Or will it take us places beyond the mortality of our own imagination.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty let's explore exactly what AI is. In a nutshell, it’s a system that will replicate intelligent and dynamic human behaviour to make independent and autonomous decisions.

We’ve all seen movies like Terminator and Space Odessy where the Artificial Intelligence that was designed and developed to aid in the success of mankind has a drastic change in opinion much like your local politicians and decides to eradicate the human race to become the most dominant species on the planet.

Despite ongoing concerns, research and development into Artificial Intelligence has been progressing at lightning pace with funding expecting to increase from $35.8 billion in 2019 to $79.2 billion by 2020 according to the International Data Corporation.

AI has even made its way into the applications we use on our PC’s and smartphones every day. So the question you’d naturally find yourself asking next is, will AI apps be dominant in the future? Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to find out.

What is AI Doing In Our Apps?
Artificial Intelligence can be divided into three easier and simpler to understand sections, and after we go over them you should be able to get an idea as to how they can significantly improve the apps of the future.

Learning
If Siri recommended an Italian restaurant three times and each time you dismissed it, Siri would learn that you probably don’t like Italian food. Learning by hit and trial is one of the most basic and effective methods of learning.

Reasoning

Just imagine if like your partner your smartphone learned all your preferences and pet peeves over time. So it would be able to make reasonable assumptions at every single possible step of your interaction process allowing for much smoother and pleasurable experience.

Problem Solving
Soon there might come a time where you’ll describe your situation and/or problems to an app, and it will be able to guide you towards a solution, effectively solving your problems. Can’t decide what to get your mom as a birthday present? Maybe the AI enriched apps of the future will know.

Artificial Intelligence Is Everywhere
Just some of the fields where AI is being deployed includes but is certainly not limited to is.

- Chatbots and Virtual Assistants
- Agriculture
- Autonomous Vehicles and Planes
- Retail, Shopping and Fashion
- Security & Surveillance
- Medical Imaging Analysis
- Warehousing & Logistic Supply Chain
- Manufacturing and production

With that sort of resume, you must be thinking to yourself, how exactly will AI make me mind-numbingly boring scroll through Twitter more exciting? Well, remember the last time your phone or some social media like Facebook and Instagram recommended a restaurant that is now literally your favourite place to eat in the whole world.

Well, the chances are they came to that recommendation by taking what they know about you from your usage patterns of their applications and applying artificial intelligence techniques to come to that conclusion.

That person you found really beautiful on Tinder last night, yeah that was probably AI that found that for you. Users are now demanding much more of personalized experience from their applications, and the only way to meet that demand is for companies to pump a considerable number of resources into AI.

Personal Assistants
AI personal assistants have been living in our pockets inside our phones for the best part of a decade now. In all that time they’ve been getting even smarter and growing in number.

personal assistants

Just a few years ago, we had Apple's Siri and Google Assistant as the main assistants on the market. Fast forward to 2020 and now we have Amazon with Alexa and even Samsung with Bixby.

All of these AI-driven systems are designed to make your lives just a little bit easier since at this point there pretty much like actual assistants you’d have if you were some bigshot at a company somewhere. From scheduling meetings and restaurant reservations to controlling the lights and temperature in your room all in one swift voice command.

google assistants

Google even introduced a feature that would have Google Assistant make calls on your behalf for trivial things such as changing booking appointments, and it’s only going to get even crazier from here on out.

As more breakthroughs are made in the field, these assistants will start becoming a scary level of smart, and who knows what companies might do in the future from the information they gather about you from what they claim as “harmless software agents”.

It’s probably clear by now that Artificial Intelligence is here and here to stay. Whether or not we’ll ever reach the point where it becomes a sentient being and wipes us off from the face of the planet remains to be seen.
